A FLASHBACK IS A NIGHTMARE IN THE DAY
Bang! A shot of pain unloads
from a memory long gone
But the day before feels like today
When your mind is stuck in a bad place
Your brain can't let go of the faces
The images that feel so fresh
Because the experiences were never
filed away properly
So, they are stuck doing reruns in your head
Every episode feels like a nightmare
Making your palms sweat and heart hurt
As the emotions that flood you are imitations
Of the ones that came before
Causing you pain when you see triggers
Dragging you into the past from the present
A flashback is a nightmare you have when you're awake.
ABOUT THE POEM: "This poem is about suffering from PTSD related flashbacks."

ENTWINED WITH GLASS SHARDS
Skin breaks with every tear that falls
You yearn to erase all of your mistakes
Through every injury that you inflict upon yourself
Each bleeding mark, a reflection of how hurt
your soul is
The glass that caged your heart is now
shrapnel covering the floor
Embedding your hands
With scars that count the number of days
You have been suffering in silence
But physical pain doesn't heal a broken heart
You are worth more than someone else's definition
And as sweet as a blooming flower
Entwined with glass shards
Your cut leaves can still reach the sun
All you have to do is look up.
ABOUT THE POEM:
"This poem is about self-harm."

SWEET DREAMS
For eternity, can't I just sleep?
Exist in a place without constant hardship
Where I can empty my mind of unpleasant thoughts
And be someone else, somewhere far from this lifetime
As my soul falls into the abyss of unconsciousness
The dreams that follow feel as real as
the cold air in autumn
They are as sweet as condensed milk
Flowing down my throat as I breathe in my imagination
Free of anhedonia and released from constant fatigue
I dream of a life
That I can only live when I am asleep.
ABOUT THE POEM:
"This poem is about depression and using sleep to escape life."

THE SWITCH TURNS
Switch goes on / Switch goes off /
A pattern of volatile emotions
And decisions made under the influence
Of a mind that is out of balance
Turning from light to dark
From hatred to love
It is like two entities inside of one body
The words exchanged are like those from a stranger
Not your father, friend, or sister
With a tsunami of apologies later
Until the switch turns
And repeats the pattern
That is the nature of bipolar.
ABOUT THE POEM: "This poem is about bipolar disorder."

SHADOW PEOPLE
A smile peels off like a holographic sticker
And the truth is uncovered
Beneath the picturesque illusion
is a broken soul with eyes bruised from crying
gaunt cheeks missing their pink blush
that died with the roses
In their once wondrous viridian garden
From the depths of their mind
that became a torment
A person turned into a ghost
Because that is what we all are
Beneath the pretence of joy and righteousness
We are nothing
But shadows.
ABOUT THE POEM: "This poem is about the veneer that we walk around with being stripped away and revealing the broken human beneath."

FIXATION
Trying to control everything
That is OCD
Making you believe that bad things
will happen if you don't obey
Fixation
Compulsion
Repeat
The cycle never is complete
Because your mind hasn't conquered the fear
A deep scar behind the need for certainty
That must be healed not through rituals and repetition
But through meditation and therapy.
ABOUT THE POEM: "This poem is about OCD."
